One simple way to make homemade chicken broth

Since I’ve been eating Whole30 approved recipes for nearly four weeks, I’ve learned an essential ingredient and common denominator is – you guessed it – chicken broth.

Now I love to cook but I’m not usually one to make more work for myself.  I’m not into making my own soap, growing my own food, or churning my own butter.

I’m speaking to you as a mother of four children who sucked the life right outa me in the form of 5,000 meals in the last twenty eight years.

So forgive me if I’m a little testy when it comes to darning socks or knitting sweaters.

    No thank you.

I doubted I could make homemade chicken broth

Naturally, when I saw this idea on how to make slow-cooker bone broth from Kelly at The Nourishing Home, I doubted.

But her recipe for one meal to feed a family three times caught my eye (call it a weakness – I’ve been feeding a tribe for years).

And when I made this delicious rotisserie-crockpot chicken

and the succeeding dinners (before I even began Whole30, mind you), I couldn’t resist the pull.

Ya’ll.  I made the chicken broth.

    And it was GOOD.

    And it was easy.

    And, it made a LOT!

Here is Kelley’s recipe for chicken broth, and here is another site for an explanation in more detail.

Basically, you cook a whole chicken in your crock, feed your family, and pick that sucker clean.

    (Cause #leftovers.)

My simple summary of how to make homemade chicken broth

Take everything out of the crockpot (in case you left those taters and carrots in there – why would you do that?) and throw the chicken bones and carcass back in there.

Wash off some carrots and celery and toss them in – no need to cut.

Sling in a few onion slices.

Add any spices you like.  Kelly is big on Thyme so I added that and everything else she suggested – onion powder, garlic, pepper, and rosemary.  But you can use whatever you like.

Squirt in a little apple cider vinegar.

Add about 6 cups of filtered water (I get it out of my ‘fridge).

Cook on high for 6-10 hours, depending on how quickly your crock pot cooks.  Mine cooks super fast even on low, so I didn’t do the full 18 hours she suggested.

Get a ladle and siphon through a plastic coffee filter.

Spoon out the broth and it should look rich and have lots of hot floaty things in it like this

Strain the broth and store in your ‘fridge up to a week, or freeze.

Here is a video for how I make and store my chicken broth.

Nice, huh?  I thought you’d like my chicken in the background.

(And all my other clutter.  #dontjudge)

(I’m starting my spring cleaning next week.  Join me here to spring clean your home and more!)

You can keep adding water to make broth ’round the clock!  Which is what I did the first time I made it.  But I got tired of hearing my crock lid jump all over the place during the night due to the water and steam buildup.

Now, I unplug the crock at night, letting it cool, store in my ‘fridge, and start her up again the next day!

My favorite dish to use this broth with is this chicken soup from The Nourishing Home.  It’s delicious!!
